Xiaomi Developing 7,500mAh Smartphone Battery with 100W Charging

Xiaomi was the first company to launch a smartphone with over 200W wired charging, but it's now focusing on making bigger batteries instead of chasing the diminishing gains of ever-faster charging rates.

The Chinese manufacturer is developing technology that will allow a 7,000mAh battery with 120W charging or a 7,500mAh battery with 100W charging to be placed in a smartphone, Digital Chat Station reported on its Weibo channel.

Here are all the combinations considered by the R&D center of the Nanjing Science and Technology Park in China.

Ability Rate Full charge
5,000 mAh 120 W 18 minutes
5,500 mAh 100 W 34 minutes
6,000 mAh 120 W 30 minutes
6,500 mAh 100 W 49 minutes
7000 mAh 120 W 40 minutes
7,500 mAh 100 W 63 minutes

Xiaomi is just one of many smartphone companies ditching fast speeds in favor of better battery capacity. Honor, vivo, and OnePlus (as well as Oppo and Realme) are switching to silicon-carbon cells that offer higher energy density, but not necessarily the fastest charging we've seen.

We've already seen that the vivo X Fold3 has a 5,500mAh battery with 80W charging in a 4.7mm thin body, while the OnePlus Ace 3 Pro sports a 6,100mAh cell with 100W charging. We'll have to wait and see which device Xiaomi will choose to be the first to use the new battery tech.
