Xiaomi 15, 15 Pro, 15 Ultra to Have Ultrasonic Fingerprint Scanner

The Xiaomi 15 series is rumored to be arriving sometime between October and November, and rumors are rife. Today, new information has emerged from Weibo user Smart Pikachu, who claims that the Xiaomi 15 series will see a significant upgrade to its fingerprint scanner. The leak suggests that all three models, the Xiaomi 15, 15 Pro, and 15 Ultra, will replace the optical in-display fingerprint scanners of their predecessors with faster and more reliable ultrasonic fingerprint sensors.

Xiaomi 15 Series to Adopt Ultrasonic Fingerprint Technology

Unlike standard optical scanners that use light to read fingerprints, ultrasonic sensors use sound waves to create a more detailed 3D map of the fingerprint. This approach has several potential benefits, including improved security, better performance in wet or dry conditions, and faster unlock speeds. For example, while optical scanners struggle with wet or dirty fingers, new sensors can still read them accurately. However, due to their superior performance, these sensors are more expensive to implement.

Gizchina News of the Week

Xiaomi hasn’t said what type of sensor it will use in the Xiaomi 15 series. Some companies use a “single-point” sensor, while others use a larger area to unlock the phone faster. We don’t know which one Xiaomi will choose yet, so keep in mind that this information hasn’t been confirmed.

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 chip is set to launch in late October. The Xiaomi 15 series may not be announced until November. These new phones will likely be the first to use Qualcomm’s latest chip, which is different because it’s switching from the usual ARM cores to Qualcomm’s own Oryon Core. Xiaomi should share more details as we get closer to launch. According to reports, the Xiaomi 15 series will include vanilla, Pro, and Ultra variants this time around. However, we expect a Lite variant to arrive later on as well.

The new technology has been gaining momentum in the flagship phone market lately. Samsung has included this technology in its flagships and we expect more brands to follow suit.
