Wear OS 5.1 could be based on Android 15 and arrive soon

If you like to keep track of software releases, you know that Wear OS isn't the easiest to keep track of. It has a separate versioning system than Android, even though it's based on Android code. And new versions of Wear OS typically come out at least a few months after the Android version they're based on.

It can be confusing, but at least we've always seen big new versions of Android bundled into big new versions of Wear OS. That looks set to change, though, as it looks like there will be a Wear OS 5.1 release, and it will be based on Android 15, even though Wear OS 5.0 is based on Android 14.

Wear OS 5.1 could be based on Android 15 and arrive soon

An “insider” reportedly revealed this information, claiming that Wear OS 5.1 is currently being tested on the Pixel Watch 2, internally at Google. Note that while this system is currently called Wear OS 5.1, it is still possible that Google will rename it Wear OS 6 before its release.

If that doesn't happen, then Wear OS 5.1 being based on a different version of Android than Wear OS 5 means that Google has finally completely decoupled the underlying Android version from the Wear OS version. This will make it harder in the future to quickly determine whether one version of Wear OS is using a newer version of Android than another.
