When it launched in late August 2023, the Fairphone 5 cost €700/£650 for an 8/256GB unit – that was the only configuration available at the time. Now the company is also introducing a more affordable variant and a new colourway.
The Fairphone 5 is now available in a 6/128GB version, which retails for €550 (note: in some regions, the online store lists the price at €500). The original 8/256GB version is still around and has even received a price reduction to €630. The phone has a microSD slot, which makes it easy to expand the storage. However, Fairphone promises support until 2030, and by then, 6GB of RAM will probably seem like a small amount.
Fairphone 5 (6/128GB) in new Moss Green and Matte Black colors
The new colorway is Moss Green and you can only get it in 6/128GB configuration. Alternatively, you can opt for the Matte Black option. The Sky Blue and Transparent editions are only available in 8/256GB.
You can find both variants of the Fairphone 5 on the company's online store. The older Fairphone 4 is still available for €450/£420, but you'll probably be better off with the 6/128GB Fairphone 5. A while back, Fairphone's CEO mentioned that the company wanted to start offering phones at an even lower €400 price point, but it seems like it still has a long way to go.
You can follow the source link to a blog post where Fairphone explains why it thinks 6GB of RAM is enough. Basically, the company says that unless you're a power user, the ideal RAM capacity is between 6GB and 12GB, while 16GB to 24GB of RAM “might be overkill.”
You asked for it, we delivered: here is the Fairphone 5 Community Edition in Moss Green. And with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, this version is also our most affordable yet, at just €549. Check it out on our website! https://t.co/MrKWjWk4vv pic.twitter.com/sosdFGIk8A
