The Volvo XC90 entered its second generation in 2015. So, it is almost ten years old and, despite the mid-cycle update in 2019, it has started to show its age.

So, you might think that the Swedish automaker has started working on its successor. However, there is no indication that it could be the last of its kind. This is a pessimistic scenario, in any case, as some media outlets believe that its successor could actually be a significant mid-cycle refresh that could go fully hybrid.

There is nothing to support these reports, so they are not real reports, right? No, they are rumors, so anything is possible, that it is a third generation that would still swear allegiance to the ICE crowd with the occasional electrified offering, a new one with only hybrid powertrains or no successor at all. There's a battery-electric EX90, in case you forgot, with a 111 kWh battery and offers a range of approximately 300 miles (~480 km).

A few months ago, Volvo also marked the end of an era by retiring the diesel engine. The last diesel-powered Volvo was an XC90, on display at the brand's museum in Gothenburg. In the future, Volvo hopes to become a Electric vehicle-the only car manufacturer and will enter the net zero emissions zone by 2024. However, as electric vehicles are less popular now, perhaps they will reconsider this strategy.

That said, everything is on the table when it comes to a possible next-generation XC90, and this model has just landed in Fantasy Land. Recently rendered by Q Cars, the rumored next-generation Volvo XC90 remains faithful to internal combustion engines and looks like an evolution of its predecessor.

It has a slightly more squared-off look with sharper lines, a sportier front bumper, a reshaped grille and revised headlights. At the rear, it gets more modern-looking taillights, a more aggressive bumper with a sizable diffuser and rather large dual exhaust pipes. The side windows are smaller and the roofline has been slightly arched towards the rear. The car sits on large alloy wheels and features more black detailing than the current model.

For what it's worth, we think this hypothetical next-generation Volvo XC90 might have a point, especially if a more skilled digital illustrator rearranged some of its pixels and sprinkled the entire piece with a modern-looking interior.

But what would your ideal 2026 (or 2027, or 2028, etc.) Volvo XC90 look like? Would it still exist in the Swedish car brand’s portfolio, or do you think the EX90 is more than capable of serving as a successor, putting the final nail in the XC90’s coffin? Your opinion is important to us, so head over to the comments section and have your say.
