Google's Pixel 9 Pro represents a significant improvement over its predecessors in terms of durability and repairability, something we cannot say about the Pixel Watch 3.
The folks at iFixit have taken apart Google's latest high-end flagship and found some key differences from previous generations. One of the most notable changes that makes the Pixel 9 Pro XL easier to repair is its dual-entry design. This allows users to remove either the front screen or the back panel independently, making repairs easier and more accessible.
The new design offers more flexibility when it comes to repairs, as users don't have to risk damaging the display (which, as it turns out, is easily damaged if you choose to take it off) to make repairs that don't require it.
Google has also Pixel 9 ProDurability has been increased by the introduction of a center plate that provides additional structural rigidity. This should make it harder to damage the phone by applying pressure to the center section. Combined with the new, boxier design that makes it more resistant to drop damage, the phone is twice as durable as its predecessor.
Findings on repairability
There are some important findings from iFixit’s Pixel 9 Pro Teardown you should take note of.
The good:
- Battery Replacement – While the process can still be challenging, battery replacement is generally easier than on previous Pixel models. However, the “sliding saw-like tab” can be difficult to use.
- Replacing the USB-C port – Google has simplified the replacement of the USB-C port by placing it on a separate daughterboard, making it easier to repair or replace if necessary.
The bad:
- Screen replacement – While the dual-entry design allows for screen replacement, it can still be tricky. The screen is described as “fragile” and there is a risk of damage during removal.
Additional features:
- Separate daughterboard – The USB-C port and SIM card are now on a separate daughterboard, making them easier to access and replace.
- Steam chamber — The Pixel 9 Pro now features a vapor chamber to help regulate heat and improve performance.
Overall, the Pixel 9 Pro represents a significant advancement in durability and repairability. The dual-entry design, improved durability, and easier component replacement make it a more user-friendly device.
However, there are still some challenges, such as the difficulty of removing the screen and battery in certain cases, so we recommend contacting a professional repair shop and not attempting the repair yourself if you have little or no experience.
