Offline Google Maps comes to Wear OS smartwatches

Google unveiled its new smartwatch, the Pixel Watch 3, a few days ago and revealed some new features that will be available on the device. The ability to navigate in offline mode with Google Maps is one of the most interesting new features that Pixel Watch 3 Users will be able to benefit from this. However, it looks like this feature is not exclusive to the Pixel Watch 3The folks at 9to5google report that almost every other smartwatch running Wear OS now gets offline support for Google Maps.

Admittedly, the new feature only seems to be present in the beta version of Google Maps, but it is a clear sign that all Wear OS smartwatches will eventually receive support for offline use of Google Maps.

If you're already in the Google Maps public beta program, you can use Google Maps offline by installing version 11.140.0701.W or later.

After installation, you should get explanations about Google Maps offline mode when you first open the app. Basically, the offline maps will be downloaded automatically from the phone to the watch. After the offline maps are downloaded to the watch, a new “Offline Maps” page should appear above the settings.

The report also mentions that in addition to syncing the offline maps already installed on the phone, the Watch app will automatically download a map for your region. It's also important to mention that maps will automatically sync when you're on Wi-Fi and charging, except for the initial download.

Again, this isn't available to everyone yet, so if you're not enrolled in the Google Maps beta program, you won't be able to use offline maps yet.
