Apple took its time switching to OLED displays for its main iPhones, but the iPhone SE stuck with the cheaper LCD technology. That should change when the next iPhone SE comes out, though, likely next year.
According to a new report from Asia, the upcoming iPhone SE will also feature an OLED display. This confirms many previous rumors. This means that Apple will no longer manufacture any smartphones with LCD screens, which will hurt Japan Display and Sharp, who were suppliers of these and also do not manufacture OLED screens for phones (JDI supplies small OLEDs for the Apple Watch).
The LCD screen of the latest iPhone SE will be the last of its kind
Apple has reportedly started ordering OLED panels for the upcoming iPhone SE from China's BOE and Korea's LG. Currently, Samsung supplies about half of the OLED panels needed for iPhones, LG has 30%, and BOE the remaining 20%.
According to UK market research firm Omdia, OLEDs will overtake LCDs in terms of the number of panels shipped for smartphones this year. We're a little surprised it's taken this long.
