Motorola Moto G55 Hands-On Review

This is the recently announced Motorola Moto G55 and we spent some time with it when it was announced, so here are our first impressions.

Motorola Moto G55 Hands-On

The Moto G55 is a subtle upgrade over the G54. You get a Dimensity 7025 over the 7020, but other than a slight bump in clock speed, there's not much more to it – you'll get about a 10-20% speed boost. You also get the same RAM up to 12GB.

The screen is the same 6.5-inch size, the same technology (LCD) and the same refresh rate – 120 Hz, and the battery capacity is unchanged at 5,000 mAh. The new Moto G55 ditches the useless 2 MP macro camera in favor of an 8 MP ultra-wide with its own macro mode, and doubles the charging speed to 30 W.

While the Moto G55 shares many design elements with its predecessor, namely the fun colors and vegan leather option, it's in line with Motorola's latest efforts with a more fluid design.

The camera is now a subtly raised element of the rear panel and no longer the abrupt shape of the Moto G54's camera island. There's no blue option this time around, replaced by Smokey Green and Twilight Purple.

We love the vegan leather finish because it adds a lot of texture and a natural, tactile feel. Better yet, it makes the phone easier to handle.

The Motorola Moto G55 offers standard features like a 3.5mm audio jack and microSD card (up to a terabyte!). You get Dolby Atmos-enabled stereo speakers, a side-mounted fingerprint reader, and Android 14 out of the box.

The camera system is improved thanks to the addition of an ultra-wide camera. The main and selfie cameras have the same 50MP and 16MP sensors as their respective predecessors. The same goes for 1080p video recording – the lack of 4K in 2024 is not a good thing.

Here's the Moto G55 (right) next to its recently announced sibling, the Moto G35. The G35 is slightly larger thanks to its 6.72-inch display. There's not much to distinguish the pair from the back, though, with very similar designs.
