Most people aren't upgrading to the iPhone 16 because of Apple Intelligence. Should you?

Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP) asked iPhone owners throughout the year through June 2024 why they plan to upgrade to a new iPhone 16 model. The top reason cited by 44% of respondents was that their current iPhone was “outdated.” At Apple, a product is considered obsolete if the tech giant stopped selling the device more than seven years ago.

Which iPhone models will no longer be supported with the release of iOS 18?

The iPhone models that are officially obsolete with the release of iOS 18 are the iPhone 8 series and the first generation iPhone SE. In November, the iPhone X will also be considered “obsolete”. The second most frequently chosen reason why an iPhone user decides to upgrade to a iPhone16 The reason for the decision to purchase the model chosen by 29% of respondents is that their current iPhone was “lost/broken/stolen”.

If you continue to have good math skills, you can see that 73% of iPhone owners are looking for a new iPhone16 model this year are doing so because of the situation they are in with their current iPhone, NOT because of some amazing new feature they must have. And this year, one might have expected many to switch to a iPhone16 model so they can use Apple Intelligence.

Apple's AI initiative is currently only available on two iPhone models, the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. Apparently, iPhones must have at least 8GB of RAM to run Apple Intelligence, which is supported by all four. iPhone16 Models. But here is the problem. If you are afraid of the iOS18.1 Beta, you will not get Apple Intelligence on your iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, iPhone16, iPhone16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max to the stable version of iOS18.1 will be released in October.

Frankly, I don't think Apple Intelligence will entice many iPhone users to upgrade. There will be some curious iPhone users who want to see for themselves what the fuss is all about. You may want to wait and see if the upcoming changes to Siri make the price of buying a iPhone16 model. If the changes to Siri that Apple unveiled at WWDC are implemented, it might be worth upgrading at that point. For now, you might want to wait unless you have an iPhone 11 or older.
