Meta has reportedly stopped working on its Apple Vision Pro competitor, codenamed La Jolla. Development of the product began in November last year and was supposed to be released in 2027.
But that's no longer the case. The reason for the project's cancellation apparently had to do with the fact that the headset used MicroOLED displays, which made it very expensive, much more than Meta's initial goal of keeping the cost under $1,000.
The $3,500 Apple Vision Pro wasn't a smash hit either, and if even Apple can't make a high-priced device a best-seller, it could be an indication that there simply isn't enough of a market for such high-end headsets to support two competitors.
Speaking about the La Jolla helmet cancellation announcement, Meta CTO Andrew Bosworth said, “We have many prototypes in development at any given time. But we don’t put them all into production. We move forward with some, we abandon others. Decisions like this happen all the time, and stories based on chatter about an individual decision will never tell the real picture.”
While the premium headset has been canceled, Meta is still working on a more affordable Quest, codenamed Ventura, which could be released before the end of the year. Meta is also expected to introduce new AR glasses next month, while the Quest 4 is expected to arrive in 2026.
