iPhone 16 Pro vs. iPhone 14 Pro: All the expected differences

Introduction

Two years of development have resulted in a new iPhone Pro that features a larger screen, a bigger battery, a faster chip, and brand new AI features.

At least that is what countless rumors and leaks have said about the iPhone 16 ProWe'll have the official dates soon – Apple has scheduled its big launch event for Monday, September 9th.

But let’s not wait until then to take a look at all the expected differences between the iPhone 16 Pro and the iPhone 14 Pro.

Design and size

Larger size and some useful new buttons

The iPhone 16 Pro And iPhone 14 Pro look very similar with their flat sides and the familiar triple camera system on the back.

However, they are not exactly the same. The iPhone 16 Pro has a 6.3-inch screen, which is larger than the 14 Pro's 6.1-inch display. The bezels around the screen are now narrower, giving it a more futuristic look.

There are also two new physical buttons. Instead of the mute button, there is now the iPhone 16 Pro features the Action button, which you can customize to pretty much anything with a few select presets and the endless possibilities of the Shortcuts app.

There's also a new record button dedicated just to camera functions. It's located below the power button on the right side of the phone, and it's capacitive, so it won't be accidentally triggered if you have your phone in your pocket. It's meant to work not only with Apple's default camera app, but also with third-party camera apps. It works similarly to a regular camera shutter button – a lighter press locks focus and exposure, and a firmer press takes a photo or starts recording a video. Since it's a capacitive button with a larger surface area, you can also swipe on it. This could be related to zooming in and out, quickly changing filters, or adjusting the strength of the portrait blur effect.

We love these new buttons. They're small changes that can make a big difference.

And if you only care about the physical dimensions of these two phones, check out below:

In summary, iPhone 16 Pro will be a little bit larger but weigh less than the 14 Pro.

The 16 Pro also uses the more noble material titanium for the frame, compared to stainless steel in the 14 Pro.

And did we mention, iPhone 16 Pro has a USB-C port while the 14 Pro uses the older, proprietary Apple Lightning connector?

Otherwise, everything remains the same: IP68 water and dust protection and Dynamic Island with Face ID on the front.

Unpacking will also be similar, only one cable is in the box and NO Charger.

Show differences

We've already mentioned the difference in screen size: 6.3 inches on the 16 Pro versus 6.1 inches on the 14 Pro, and the narrower bezels around the screen on the 16 Pro.

The other expected change is that the 16 Pro will simply be brighter and easier to use outdoors. The 14 Pro reaches a typical brightness of around 1,000 nits, while the 16 Pro is expected to be able to reach a maximum typical brightness of 1,200 nits.

However, the Face ID module does not change and works similarly on both phones.

Performance and software

The new A18 Pro chip is promising … and offers AI

Apple has a new chipset for the iPhone 16 Proand we expect it to run faster and cooler. We don't have an official name yet, but it's likely it will be called the Apple A18 Pro, as opposed to the A16 Bionic chip on the 14 Pro.

Apple is expected to move to a new manufacturing technology at chipmaker TSMC with the next-generation 3nm process, so we are optimistic.

The more important upgrade, however, might be the modest upgrade to 8GB of RAM (compared to 6GB of RAM on the 14 Pro).

This is crucial for Apple Intelligence, which apparently only works on iPhones with 8GB of RAM.

The rollout of AI will be staggered, with many of the coolest features like the new and more powerful Siri not arriving until months after the iPhone 16 launches. Still, you know they'll appear on the 16 Pro and not the 14 Pro.

A smaller but important upgrade is the switch to the newer Qualcomm Snapdragon X75 modem, which is said to offer improved connectivity and a better signal.

It is also likely that the iPhone 16 Pro supports Wi-Fi 7 compared to Wi-Fi 6 on the iPhone 14 ProBenefits include up to 2.4x faster speeds and lower latency.

camera

Sharper ultra-wide-angle camera and longer zoom on the 16 Pro

Both the 16 Pro and 14 Pro feature a triple camera system on the back, but with some key differences.

The main camera on both phones is still a 48-megapixel sensor, but the iPhone 16 Pro will benefit from better photo processing.

You also get a big upgrade to the ultra-wide camera. The 12MP ultra-wide snapper on the 14 Pro is replaced by a new 48MP snapper on the 16 Pro, which should perform better at night and give you the ability to capture high resolution footage.

Finally, the 3x zoom camera is replaced with a 5x tetraprism zoom lens. This is great if you want to film your kid's concert or something in the distance, but it also means you no longer have the native 3x zoom option (which we really liked when shooting portraits).

In video, the big innovation could be the long-awaited, high-quality slow motion. iPhone 14 Pro and previous models were designed for 1080p slow motion, and the 16 Pro is said to offer 3K120 video with far more detail. This feature is so advanced that many high-end cameras don't yet support it, and it could revolutionize creative video recording on the iPhone.

Most Android phones lack this feature, with one exception: the flagship Sony Xperia 1 series.

Battery life and charging

Expect a slight increase in battery life and even faster charging speeds

The physically larger iPhone 16 Pro also gets a larger battery, which we are very excited about.

The battery is rumored to be 3,577mAh, which is almost 10% more than the 14 Pro (which has a 3,200mAh battery).

Apple rates the iPhone 14 Pro for 23 hours of video playback and 75 hours of audio playback, and we hope the 16 Pro will have even better numbers.

Of course, we will also carry out our extensive internal battery tests as soon as we have the iPhone 16 Pro and gives you much more information about battery life.

Another exciting possibility is the first increase in loading speed in years.

The iPhone 16 Pro Rumor has it that the device will reach 40W charging speeds, almost double that of the 14 Pro (officially listed at 20W, but unofficially around 25W). We're not sure if that will be the case, as Apple is very conservative with charging, but we hope so.

Of course, MagSafe will be on board as before. And we could get faster wireless charging again at 20W, an upgrade from the 15W on the 14 Pro.

Summary

So, should iPhone 14 Pro Owners update to the iPhone 16 Pro?

We say: Yes.

If all the rumors come true, iPhone 16 Pro will add a whole bunch of cool new AI tricks, it will have a more powerful camera system, longer battery life, and faster charging.

This means that all our requirements are met.

We'll find out if all these leaks and rumors are true next Monday, September 9th, so be sure to check back here for all the final details.
