Originally introduced in 1964 as a performance package for the F-85 and Cutlass, the '442' is one of GM's most iconic nicknames. By 1970, it had evolved into a distinct model, allowing Oldsmobile to compete with models like the Pontiac GTO, Chevelle SS, or Dodge Charger.
The 1970 Oldsmobile 442 ended up being the pinnacle of the nameplate. This thing was so good that it was assigned the pace car role at that year's Indianapolis 500 race. By the way, it could hold its own in a straight line, too. Some say it could cover a quarter mile in just 13.7 seconds, which is pretty impressive.
Speaking of impressive, we just came across this 442 Hardtop Coupe model, which was completely remodeled inside and out before 2019. It was up for auction until recently, though it hasn't sold.
The bid only went up to $47,500, and judging by the comments section of the listing, people were genuinely surprised it didn't sell. Maybe it's not a production car, but to fail to break the $50,000 mark? I mean, what's that all about? At the same time, we have no idea how high the reserve was, so it's possible the owner had unrealistic expectations.
Either way, this is the kind of car where you feel really bad if it doesn't sell. The 442 is a nice, understated muscle car, and this spec is something else. Let's take a closer look.
Although originally finished in Burgundy Mist, it received a W30-style fiberglass hood before being repainted in black with white stripes. Other highlights include dual door mirrors, quad headlights, 442 badging, dual exhaust tips with trumpet-style trim, plus a set of 15-inch chrome Cragar Street Pro wheels with 255/60 BFGoodrich Radial T/A tires.

Also note the lowered suspension with adjustable air springs (pro) and various cracks in the paint on the bonnet (con).
Moving inside, that's where you'll find the white vinyl bucket seats and rear bench seat, with matching door panels and black carpets. It also has a center console, Hurst shifter, 442-branded floor mats, red LED lighting, air conditioning, custom steering wheel, RetroSound stereo with aftermarket speakers, plus a custom instrument bezel and auxiliary gauges.
As for what happens under the hood, that’s where you’ll find the 455ci Rocket V8, equipped with performance intake and exhaust manifolds, to be paired with an Edelbrock carburetor. It also has a March accessory drive system, a Cold Case aluminum radiator, dual electric fans, braided hoses under the hood, and a replacement fuel tank.
We're not sure of the exact horsepower, but all power goes to the rear wheels through a Muncie M21 four-speed manual transmission, which has also been overhauled.
