Internet Goes Crazy Over Porsche Spotted At LAX, Not Even Porsche Knows What It Is

A car that appears to be a Porsche, spotted at Los Angeles International Airport and posted on social media, has set the internet alight. No one knows what kind of Porsche it is. Not even Porsche!

The mysterious Porsche arrived at LAX earlier this week, and those who saw it thought it might be something the German brand was planning to unveil during Monterey Car Week. However, Porsche says it has no idea what car landed at LAX, which has left people wondering: What is it? Where did it come from? Where is it going?

The model shares design cues with the 993 GT1 Strassenversion, the limited, road-legal version of the 911 GT1 racing car, launched for homologation purposes in 1997. Most of them were painted in Arctic Silver and Fern White, with some examples getting special colors such as Polar Silver, Indian Red or Pastel Yellow.

However, the car that was flown to LAX lacks the rear wing of the GT1 Road Version, but does feature a large ducktail spoiler and air intakes behind the front doors, features that the street-legal version of the race car does not have.

The front end is also different, with a larger grille and what appear to be thin LED lights beneath the round headlights. Earlier this month, RML Group teased its own version of the Porsche 911, codenamed P39, to celebrate its 40th anniversary. That one has twin light strips beneath the headlights, a massive hood scoop, and unlike the LAX one, a rear wing.

Jalopnik contacted Porsche and asked them about the car that had set wheels on US soil. Porsche told them it had no idea.

However, we should take this with a grain of salt because if this is a car commissioned by some wealthy Porsche enthusiast, it might be best if no one knows that he paid a fortune for that commission.

Considering the uniqueness of the design, no matter where it comes from or where it goes, it is definitely worth a fortune. However, Monterey is not out of the question.

The model we are looking at could very well be a 911 redesigned at the request of someone nostalgic for the iconic versions. One thing is for sure. It is not a Porsche from Singer. The company reportedly transported the model from its headquarters in Torrance to Monterey for the event. Only 341 miles separate the two.

So, we might also think that this Porsche flew across the Atlantic Ocean, coming straight from Europe, for example. Or maybe it's not a Porsche at all, but just a Prius with fake body panels. There's really nothing to lose by guessing, right?

The photo of the mysterious car was uploaded to Reddit in the thread “What's this car?” and has garnered dozens of comments from people who have made wild guesses. None of them seem to be correct, though.
