Google Workspace extends Gemini's capabilities with additional file types and uploads directly from Drive

Google Workspace users with Gemini Business, Enterprise, Education, or Education Premium licenses now have more options to upload files directly into Gemini, Google's advanced AI model. This new feature allows users to upload documents, spreadsheets, or text files from both Google Drive and their local devices. Uploading files allows Gemini to gain additional context and analyze the content within. This improved understanding can help users in several ways:

  • Summary of complex issues
  • Identifying trends and insights
  • Recommendations for improving writing and document organization
  • More personalized and relevant answers
Currently, this feature does not support Context-Aware Access (CAA) for files uploaded from Google Drive. However, it will honor file access control settings in Drive, allowing users to only upload files they own or have shared with. It's important to note that file upload is not available for Google Workspace users who use Gemini as an additional Google service. Additionally, users with a Gemini license for Google Workspace who use Gemini as a core service are subject to the Google Workspace Terms of Service or the Google Workspace for Education Terms of Service. When using Gemini as a core service, chats and uploaded files are not reviewed by humans or used to improve generative AI models.

For administrators, local file upload in Gemini is available by default for all authorized users. However, file upload from Google Drive requires Workspace extensions to be enabled in Gemini. See the Help Center for detailed instructions.

End users can upload up to 10 files at a time, with each file having a maximum size of 100 MB. To upload files from Google Drive, users must connect Google Workspace apps and services in the extension settings.

This new file upload feature will be rolled out rapidly in both Rapid and Scheduled Release domains, with full visibility expected within 1-3 days starting August 27, 2024.

This update is a significant advancement for Gemini, making it even more useful for Google Workspace users. By incorporating the context of uploaded files, Gemini can provide more accurate and relevant answers, further increasing productivity and efficiency.
