Google has been improving its Wallet app over the past few years, making it useful not only for payments but also for adding boarding passes, loyalty cards, transit cards, and more. Additionally, Arizona, Colorado, Georgia, and Maryland are all states that allow Google Wallet to store personal IDs and driver's licenses. Now, Californians can do so as well.
Google Wallet login options
The latest version of Google Wallet now gives you the ability to add California IDs and driver's licenses, though it's important to note that this is still a pilot program and is limited to 1.5 million signups for now.
The requirements aren’t very high. You just need a smartphone running Android 8.0 or later and the Bluetooth and Nearby Devices permissions enabled so that the Wallet app can share your ID with entities that request it. You can also choose which information from your documents to share, which is very useful for privacy.
Another important fact to keep in mind is that government-issued cards don't sync with your Google account. They stay on the phone, so you'll have to add them again if you switch devices.
The verification process requires a short selfie video, which is submitted to the DMV. You will then receive your verification via email.
