Google unveils compact Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro XL

How about a twist? The Google Pixel Pro is now available in a compact form factor! Today, Google unveiled the new Pixel 9 Pro with a 6.3-inch display, alongside the successor to last year's flagship, which is now called the Pixel 9 Pro XL with a 6.8-inch display.

Both of these displays are high-brightness (up to 3,000 nits) Super Actua LTPO units with a 1-120Hz refresh rate and flat Gorilla Glass Victus 2 on top. The Pixel 9 Pro's 6.3-inch display has a resolution of 1280 x 2856 px, while the Pixel 9 Pro XL's 6.8-inch display increases that resolution to 1344 x 2992 px.

Both Pixel 9 Pros finally ditch optical fingerprint scanners in favor of an ultrasonic scanner, which Google claims is 50% faster. Ultrasonic scanners can read your fingerprint without the need for bright light and are generally faster and more reliable.

The Pixel 9 series' design emphasizes flat sides. The Pixel 9 Pro and 9 Pro XL both have flat bezels with a shiny, polished metallic look around the phone and cameras. The finish contrasts with the matte look of the back panel.

Both phones look identical except for the size difference. They also feature identical bezels on the back with triple camera setups.

All rear cameras benefit from multi-zone LDAF (laser-assisted focusing). Up front, Google has upgraded its Pros to a new 42MP selfie camera (likely using the 50MP Samsung 3J1 sensor).

The new Pixel 9 series uses the Tensor G4 chipset, a 4nm unit with a Cortex-X4 core clocked at up to 3.1GHz, 3 Cortex-A720 cores clocked at up to 2.6GHz, and 4 Cortex-A520 cores clocked at up to 1.95GHz, as well as the Titan M2 security coprocessor. Both Pixel 9 Pro models come with 16GB of RAM, while storage starts at 128GB and goes up to 1TB.

One of the big changes in the Tensor G4 is an Exynos 5400 modem, which should bring better efficiency.

The Pixel 9 Pro has a 4,700mAh battery while the Pixel 9 Pro XL increases the capacity to 5,060mAh. Both phones support 45W wired charging with a 70% charge taking 30 minutes.

Google’s Gemini AI plays a major role in the Pixel 9 Pro series. You can ask Gemini to give you cooking ideas based on a photo of the contents of your fridge, while Magic Editor can remove distractions from photos and even generate an entire landscape in a photo – think a spectacular sunset where there’s a dull one.

Pixel Screenshots uses Gemini to identify the contents of all your screenshots, so you can then use it to recall the information they contain.

The Circle to Search feature is also present on the Pixel 9 Pros: just hold down the navigation bar at the bottom, then search for anything on your screen to get Google results. Google is promising 7 years of Pixel Drops for the Pixel 9 series.

The Pixel 9 Pro comes in four colors: Obsidian, Hazel, Rose Quartz, and Porcelain. You can pre-order them starting today. The Pixel 9 Pro XL will ship starting August 22, while the Pixel 9 Pro will be available in stores a little later, on September 4 in the US and September 9 in Europe. Both phones come with one year of Gemini Advanced and 2TB of cloud storage for free.
