Google Photos' new update lets you block faces you'd rather avoid in your memories

Remember back in May when we mentioned that Google Photos was working on a new “Show Less” option for faces in Memories? Well, whether you remember that or not doesn't really matter because the big news is that Google is now finally rolling out this option to users.

You can prevent someone you don't want to see from appearing in your memories

Google's new support page explains that if you'd rather not see a certain person in your featured memories, you now have the option to block their face or show less. When you block someone, they will no longer appear in any memories, including group photos with others. If you choose show less, you won't get specific memories about that person, but they may still appear in group photos within your memories. So if you're sick of seeing, for example, your ex's face on your phone, here's how to fix it:

  1. Open the Google Photos app.
  2. Tap your profile photo or initials in the top right, then go to photo settings.
  3. Select Settings and then Reminders
  4. Open Hide people and pets
  5. Under Show Less or Blocked, tap Select Faces.
  6. Select the faces you want to hide.
  7. Tap Done.

However, Google points out that while face hiding works pretty well, it's not foolproof, so you can also hide a specific date. That way, photos taken on that date won't appear in your featured memories carousel. Here's how:

  1. Open the Google Photos app.
  2. Tap your profile photo or initial at the top, then go to photo settings.
  3. Tap Settings, then tap Reminders, then select Hide Data.
  4. Add the data you want to hide.
  5. Tap Hide.

Google Photos is a great tool for organizing and recalling your memories, and I think this new option takes it a step further. After all, sometimes it can really help to make a few changes to what's displayed, especially if your photo library spans decades of precious moments.
