Today, Google Photos is getting some search improvements, allowing you to use more descriptive queries in everyday language. Google gave the example of “Emma painting in the garden,” and you can see how it works in the video below.
You can sort results by date or relevance, to help you get to the specific image you’re looking for even faster. This experience is currently rolling out in English to all Android and iOS users, and will be expanded to other languages “in the coming weeks.”
Some US users are also getting early access to Ask Photos through Google Labs today, if you’re on the waitlist. This streamlines search using the power of Gemini AI. Ask Photos understands the context of your photo gallery: the most important people in your life, your hobbies, your favorite foods, that sort of thing.
So it can extract relevant details to help you retrieve specific memories and uncover insights about your life. The video below shows how this works using “What did we eat at the hotel in Stanley?” as the question.
Since Ask Photos is essentially a chatbot within Google Photos, it's conversational, so if it doesn't find what you're looking for on the first try, you can give it hints or additional details.
You can also ask it to help you summarize the best things you did on a trip and suggest the best photos from a specific event. It all works thanks to the magic of Gemini templates.
Google says humans may review your Ask Photos queries to improve the service, but only after you've signed out of your Google Account to protect your privacy. Answers provided by Ask Photos aren't reviewed by humans unless you provide feedback or in rare cases to address abuse or harm.
