GM Recalls Cadillac Lyriq for Unexpected Activation of Anti-Lock Brake System

The largest automaker in the Detroit Big Three has identified an issue affecting 21,469 Cadillac Lyriq vehicles. The affected vehicles were produced for the 2023 and 2024 model years between December 14, 2022, and August 5, 2024.

On May 31, following reports of two minor crashes involving a loss of braking performance, GM began reviewing the recall conditions. The Detroit-based automaker eventually identified a flaw in the electronic brake control module software. A thorough analysis of available data also uncovered a third potentially related incident, though that one did not result in a crash.

The investigator determined that the unexpected activation of the anti-lock brake system occurs during certain braking events on dry surfaces at speeds less than 25 miles per hour, or 40 kilometers per hour. The allegations of reduced braking performance can be explained by abdominal muscles continuing to release brake pressure into the vehicle's service brake system.

Like most Tesla recalls, the remedy comes in the form of an over-the-air software update. Alternatively, owners can have the update performed by Cadillac dealers at no cost. General Motors began containment efforts at the plant on August 2, with the Lyriq for North America coming from Spring Hill Manufacturing in Tennessee.

SHM was originally tasked with producing Saturn vehicles. It currently produces the aforementioned zero-emission sport utility vehicle, the front-wheel-drive XT5 and XT6, as well as the Acura ZDX for American Honda Motor. It goes without saying that the ZDX and the technically similar Honda Prologue are based on the Lyriq electric vehicle platform.

Dealers have already been notified of the software defect and the fix, with owner notification expected to begin on September 23. The Cadillac Lyriq’s infotainment system is programmed to display pop-up notifications on the center display whenever a software update is available. Alternatively, Cadillac Lyriq owners can manually check for updates in the Updates menu of the Settings app.

The first production vehicle based on the BEV3 platform was launched for the 2023 model year with dual-motor and rear-engine powertrains. Twinned with the Chevrolet Blazer Electric vehicleThe Lyriq is also made by GM’s joint venture with Chinese automaker SAIC in Shanghai. Currently listed on Caddy’s website as a 2024 model, the midsize crossover is available to configure for $57,195 before destination.

Customers are presented with a choice of three trim levels: Tech, Luxury and Sport. We look forward to seeing a V performance model in the near future, a faster model that should match or eclipse the Chevrolet Blazer EV SS's 557 horsepower and 648 pound-feet (879 Nm) of near-instant torque.

Slotting between the compact Optiq and the full-size Escalade IQ, the Lyriq gets 307 miles (494 kilometers) on a full charge with all-wheel drive. Switching to rear-wheel drive improves the luxury crossover’s EPA driving range estimate to 314 miles (505 kilometers).
