When the location in question is none other than The Strip at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway in Nevada, we are surely in the presence of timeless grandeur, right? But wait, let's see how the story unfolded. First of all, it is important to note that the videographer behind the Wheels more YouTube channel is a big fan of The Strip.
Since he is a regular customer, it is logical to assume that he comes across such great encounters. So, in the right lane is a Grabber Orange Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 S550 equipped with the mighty 5.2-liter supercharged cross-plane V8 engine with 760 hp and 625 lb-ft of torque.
Next to it, on the left, is a white Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat Redeye (with a splash of crimson on the front) with the iconic Hemi V8, and the 6.2-liter supercharged engine churns out no less than 797 horsepower. On paper, the advantage is Team Mopar’s, but FoMoCo enthusiasts also know that they are notoriously finicky in the early stages of drag racing, and sometimes it’s nearly impossible to get a good start with them.
So, before we saw the race, we had calculated that the odds were closer to 50/50. Well, they didn’t have a pro tree and had plenty of time to prepare, which, as far as we can tell, worked wonders in favor of the big Hellcat. As such, the Redeye took off like a transport plane bolted to a catapult, while the Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 racer was much slower to react.
As a result, it became a race to the finish, with the orange Blue Oval doing its best to catch up with its rival. Alas, it was to no avail, as both roared to the finish line while the Dodge held on to the lead. So, the win wasn’t just that; it was a bus-length massacre: 9.46 seconds vs. 10.83 seconds at 148 mph vs. 136 mph.
Well, the video embedded below is almost four minutes long and this race was a surprising appetizer. Then came a black widebody Challenger, but it also didn't stand a chance: 9.64 to 11.11! Last but not least, the orange GT500 also had a chance to shine against one of its own, a white Ford Mustang GT S550, and it almost made a fool of itself with another very slow start. In the end, however, it had enough power to recover: 10.67 to 12.26. Nice, huh?
