The iPhone 16 series will feature a number of camera upgrades, including higher resolution sensors, support for a new image format and improved video recording capabilities, according to a new Apple Insider Report.
The iPhone 16
The two cameras on the iPhone16 and 16 Plus will be oriented vertically instead of diagonally. Previous reports said this is being done to bring spatial video recording to the standard models. The feature is currently limited to the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max and allows you to record videos in three dimensions.
The iPhone 15’s 48MP camera with f/1.6 aperture and 2x optical quality zoom will be upgraded to the iPhone16The same camera will also be seen on the iPhone 17.
The 12MP ultra-wide-angle camera gets a larger f/2.2 aperture, which should allow it to capture more light and thus enable better low-light shots.
The iPhone16 and 16 Plus could also get Macro mode, which would be a first for standard models. This feature allows users to take detailed close-up shots, which is great for photographing small or close objects.
iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max
The bigger changes are, unsurprisingly, reserved for Apple's premium models. The main unit will continue to be a 48MP sensor with an aperture of f/1.78. The 5x periscope telephoto lens reserved for the iPhone 15 Pro Max will also be available on the iPhone 16 Pro this year.
Both Pro models feature a 48MP ultra-wide camera, a significant improvement over the current 12MP ultra-wide camera. Like the main camera, it also features pixel binning and allows you to capture photos in ProRAW format, giving you a lot of flexibility when editing photos.
The Pro models should also be able to record 3k videos at 120 frames per second and Dolby Vision.
Record button and new image format
Rumor has it that Apple is also offering a new image format called JPEG-XL, which iPhone16 Series.
The report also goes into the details of the new capture button. Apparently, it will be a capacitive button and will be located in the bottom right corner. This means that the phones will have the feel of a dedicated camera in landscape mode, with your index finger naturally resting on it.
You can decide which camera app the button launches. As for controls, a force-sensitive half-press is tied to developer features. This lets you do things like lock exposure and focus before pressing the button all the way down to take a photo.
The capacitive nature of the button also allows it to be used as a sort of trackpad, unlocking new features that again depend on the developer's decision. Previous rumors suggested that you could use it to zoom in and out, but it might also be able to do other things like go through different filters.
