Canalys: Smart audio market up 10% in Q2, affordable TWS models are the main drivers

The global smart audio market saw a record quarter in terms of total shipments with a year-on-year growth of 10.6% according to the latest data. Canalys A total of 106 million units were shipped during the April-June period, the highest figure for a second quarter so far.

Smart audio includes wireless earbuds and headphones with a physical wire connecting the two earbuds and true wireless earbuds that have no connecting wires between the two speakers and each side can operate independently.

Open wireless earbuds and TWS earbuds were the major contributors to the smart audio segment growth in Q2. TWS earbuds in the sub-$50 price segment accounted for over 50% of the overall market during the quarter.

Apple (including Beats) was the top vendor during the period with 18 million units shipped and a 17.1% market share. Samsung (including Harman subsidiaries) came in second with 8.1 million shipments and a 7.6% market share. Indian brand Boat Audio rounded out the top three with 6.7 million shipments and an estimated 6.3% share of the global market.

Xiaomi is the fourth largest brand globally with 5.2 million units shipped and a market share of just under 5%. It is also the only brand in the top 5 with a positive year-on-year growth of 40%. Sony is the fifth largest brand in terms of shipments with 4 million units and a market share of 3.7%.
