While Apple doesn't usually like to confirm anything about unreleased private-label products before their actual announcement events, Apple subsidiary Beats by Dre just surprised the entire tech industry with the most understated social media teaser ever.
Not only is the brand clearly showcasing an unannounced earbud on Instagram today, but the short promotional video ends with an equally clear mention of the full and official name of this product. The Powerbeats Pro 2 are finally coming out… in 2025, which is obviously not exactly right around the corner.
The first-generation Powerbeats Pro are, mind you, almost five and a half years old already, so we definitely won't blame you if you gave up all hope of a sequel before that random teaser. Then again, Beats also randomly decided to revive the Pill speaker earlier this year after almost a decade of total radio silence, not to mention launching the Solo 4 headphones almost eight years after the Solo 3.
Unfortunately, we don't know anything about the features and capabilities of the upcoming Powerbeats Pro 2, but if the initial edition is any indication of what the manufacturer is looking for here, we can expect excellent battery life, flawless connectivity, good sound quality, and most importantly, a gym-friendly design that prioritizes durability and comfort over elegance.
At first glance, the Beats Powerbeats Pro 2, “built” for professional baseball pitcher Shohei Ohtani (and other athletes like him), appear to be thinner, sleeker, and presumably lighter than their predecessors, while retaining the overall aesthetic and, of course, the iconic ear hooks of the aforementioned OG Powerbeats Pro.
Do we expect these bad boys to make it onto our list of the best wireless earbuds money can buy next year? Absolutely. Will they compete directly with the soon-to-be-released AirPods Pro 3? Almost certainly not from a design perspective, probably not in the audio performance department either, but possibly in terms of retail price.
