Apple tries again to eliminate an important bug and releases a new version of iOS 17.6.1

If it doesn't work the first time, release another update. That's exactly what Apple did today when it re-released iOS 17.6.1 just over a week and a half after the update was first released. The original update had the build number 21G93 and the new update released today has the build number 21G101. The new version of iOS17.6.1 fixes a bug that could prevent users from enabling or disabling the Enhanced Privacy feature.

To be clear, this is the same problem that Apple addressed in the first version of iOS17.6.1, so it is unclear how today's update differs from the first version of iOS17.6.1. The Enhanced Privacy feature is an optional setting that provides users with Apple's highest level of cloud data security. The bug only affected a small number of iPhone users and prevented them from enabling the feature. Those who tried and couldn't received an error message.

As mentioned, those who tried to disable Enhanced Privacy were also affected by the bug. After turning it off, the feature's interface showed users that Enhanced Privacy was disabled, when in reality it was still active and protecting iCloud data. As Apple points out, “This update includes important bug fixes and addresses an issue that prevents you from turning Enhanced Privacy on or off.”

To install the update, go to Settings > Generally > Software update and follow the instructions. Those who have already completed the first iOS17.6.1 version on their iPhones may not see the prompt for the new update, while only those who iOS17.6 or older will receive it. We have two answers to this. First, all iPhone users can download the new version of iOS17.6.1 from Apple’s developer center.
Second, although Apple referred to the original iOS17.6.1 version as important, but it did not seem that the version was worth making a point change to iOS17.6.2. Now if we were in this situation (my iPhone 15 Pro Max is running iOS 18.1 Developer Beta 2), I would probably try updating the regular way via the Settings app. If I had installed the first iOS17.6.1 Update and did not receive any prompt, I Go to the developer center and install it from there.

For those of you with an iPad, a second version of iPadOS 17.6.1 was also released today, which has the same build number 21G101 as today's iOS17.6.1 version.
