Gurman says Apple could introduce two different versions of the fourth-generation AirPods, with a cheaper variant offering users basic features. The more expensive model would feature active noise cancellation (ANC). The cheaper model is expected to replace the second-generation AirPods in Apple's lineup. That model, released in 2019, costs $129 on Apple's online store. The more expensive model with ANC would replace the third-generation AirPods. The latter was released in 2021 and costs $179.
Both models will look the same, according to Gurman, who adds that the third-generation AirPods Pro will arrive at a later date. If Gurman's report turns out to be true, the more expensive fourth-generation AirPods will be the first non-Pro version of the earbuds to offer ANC. Currently, consumers looking for AirPods with ANC functionality will have to buy the second-generation AirPods Pro, which cost $249.

Apple's plans most likely include permanently removing the second-generation AirPods from the company's lineup; the third-generation model could remain, but at a significantly reduced price. According to analytics firm Canalys, AirPods still led the True Wireless Stereo (TWS) market in the first quarter of this year with a 24% market share. This gives Apple a resounding 16 percentage point lead over Samsung and Xiaomi's 8%.
