As Apple prepares to unveil its next iPhone 16 series at the “It's Glowtime” event on September 9, rumors are already circulating about the iPhone 17 series, expected in 2025. The latest hype comes from China.
Rumours say the iPhone 17 will again have 12 GB of RAM
A normally reliable leaker, Mobile Phone Chip Expert (translated source), posted on the Chinese social media platform Weibo that the iPhone17 The models are expected to come with 12GB of RAM to enhance the device’s AI capabilities. Apple has been slowly increasing the RAM of its iPhones. Take the iPhone 14 series, for example – every model, Pro or not, came with 6GB of RAM. However, in the current iPhone 15 lineup, there is a difference: the iPhone15 and 15 Plus remain at 6GB, while the Pro models – iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max – increase to 8GB. Rumor has it that this extra RAM is the reason why Apple Intelligence, the company’s AI-powered features, is only available on the iPhone 15 Pro Since Apple Intelligence requires 8 GB of RAM, all four upcoming Apple models iPhone16 Models are expected to come with this amount, as well as the rumored iPhone SE 4, which is likely to be released in the spring. If the iPhone17 If models actually get 12GB of RAM, they could offer even more advanced AI features on the device.

If the iPhone17 can perform more AI tasks directly on the device, while other iPhones rely on Apple's Private Cloud Compute (PCC) servers. Next year's models could be significantly faster with certain Apple Intelligence features. Additionally, local processing of AI would likely improve security.
This is not the first time we have heard that Apple’s 2025 iPhones will get more RAM. Back in May, well-known analyst Jeff Pu mentioned that the iPhone17 Pro and Pro Max would be equipped with 12 GB of RAM, while the iPhone17 and the rumor iPhone17 Slim or Air would stick with 8GB. Last month, another leak also suggested that the iPhone 17 series could potentially be the first with 12GB of RAM.
Of course, we won't know for sure what the tech giant has planned for next year's iPhones until it officially announces the details, but I think it would make sense for Apple to add more RAM – not only to support Apple Intelligence, but also to keep up with the current trend in the smartphone industry.
